Mississippi Hurricane Hazard Profile

Climate-Adjusted Hazard Data · Model Version 1.0

Overview

Mississippi's Gulf Coast is directly exposed to hurricane wind and storm surge hazard. The shallow bathymetry of the Mississippi Sound amplifies storm surge. IBTrACS historical data shows the MS Gulf Coast has experienced some of the highest storm surge observations in US history, particularly from Hurricane Katrina's 27.8-foot surge in Pass Christian.

Notable Historical Events

12005 Hurricane Katrina — 27.8 ft surge at Pass Christian, 238 MS fatalities (FEMA DR-1604)
22020 Hurricane Zeta — CAT 2 at MS coast (FEMA DR-4576)
31969 Hurricane Camille — CAT 5, 24.6 ft surge, 143 MS fatalities

Hazard Scoring Approach

CivilSense computes a Climate-Adjusted Hazard Score (0–10) for hurricane hazard at any US address. The score is composed of weighted sub-components derived from federal data sources and peer-reviewed research. All score components are transparent and returned in API responses.

These are hazard scores — physical intensity likelihood only. They do not include property exposure or vulnerability data. We never call a hazard score a risk score. See the full methodology for scoring details.
